General Service Conference

The General Service Conference is a meeting of group delegates, trustees, and staff of GAA International Services who together decide on the overall direction of GAAIS and decide matters such as the content of literature and the website, how to answer inquiries, the wording of steps, traditions, the GSC charter, and GAAIS bylaws, and public outreach.

GAAIS is the service structure’s non-profit corporation which handles business matters, like printing and distributing literature, maintaining the website, and answering inquiries. GAAIS must be incorporated in order to own the website, domain names, and literature, to sell books, and to legally handle the money involved. GAAIS also handles the legal matters of incorporation, filing, and accounting.

The trustees of GAAIS are in charge of running the non-profit. They have no power over groups, meetings, or members. In the hierarchy of power, GAAIS is at the very bottom.

The business of GAAIS is overseen by trustees who take direction from the General Service Conference and direct the staff of GAAIS. As of 2026, there are four trustees charged with the legal work of incorporation. The staff consists of hotline volunteers, webmasters, and no hired workers.

The Trustees have the power to direct GAAIS business details. They don’t have power over meetings, members, or groups. They have a voice and vote in the General Service Conference, which gives direction to GAAIS and its trustees.

A delegate is a member elected by his or her group to represent them at the General Service Conference. Any GAA group with two or more members may elect a delegate. A large group with many meetings may elect up to three delegates. A delegate takes direction from the group that elected him or her and gives direction through the GSC to the Trustees and GAAIS.
